----- 🇺🇸 Few people make the trip to Anjar. But this Umayyad city, located in the Bekaa Valley 60 km away from Beirut, is a little gem with an architecture and story you won’t see anywhere else in the region. Anjar was built in the 8th century and never finished, as the Umayyad caliphate was defeated soon after. Located at the crossroad between 2 major commercial axes - the Beirut-Damascus road and the Homs-Tiberiade one-, the city is one of the few examples of Umayyad architecture in Lebanon. The ruins remained abandoned and untouched for centuries, until archaeologists started digging in the 1940s. It is on the list of the Unesco World Heritage Sites since 1984. Check the main Palace, partially rebuilt, the mosque, the small Palace, the baths, and more generally just wander around. You will be seduced by the harmony and charm of the site.
